Developing the business case for a new Graphene commercialisation company in Manchester
Working for The University of Manchester, we have been commissioned to develop the business case for a new commercial company to drive the commercialisation of Graphene in Manchester. The work is being led by Simon Pringle, supported by Dr Robert Macnee, with additional inputs being provided by Dr Mark Matthews, one of Steer-ED’s Specialist Advisers.
Manchester is the home of Graphene’s discovery, and since 2010 much investment has been made by The University and wider partners in the City Region and Whitehall to develop the underpinning research base. This has included investment in the National Graphene Institute (in 2013) and more recently the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (in 2016, with co-investment from Masdar, the Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy company owned by Mubadala partners).
Against this background, we have been appointed non-competitively by The University of Manchester to develop a business plan for ‘2D-A’ (working title), a new business which will drive the translation and commercialisation of Graphene and 2D intellectual property. The work is involving wide consultation with key partners across the City Region, within academia, the VC/angel communities, and the private sector, and developing IP flow and cash requirements for how the new business will operate. The intention is that ‘2D-A’ will launch as a new commercial venture in late 2019.
