A high-performing technical education system and vision for Lancashire

There is currently a high degree of change in the policy environment surrounding Technical Education.

The recommendations of the Independent Review of Technical Education and its case for change (Case for change PDF), which concluded in 2016, were accepted by Government in the Post-16 Skills Plan with an action plan for reform published in October 2017, following Royal Assent of the Technical and Further Education Act in April 2017. The recently published Industrial Strategy maintains the pivotal role of Technical Education in delivering economic success.

To drive forward the implementation of these major reforms in Lancashire, SDG Economic Development, working with David Briggs, is assisting Lancashire Skills and Employment Hub with the development of a vision for a high-performing Technical Education system.

The vision will take account of the national policy context, forecast labour market demands in Lancashire's priority sectors, current and proposed physical learning assets, and the future ambitions of providers based in the Lancashire area. It will:

  • Be set within the context of national skills and education policy and local initiatives;

  • Provide a clear and shared definition of technical education.
